Michele McCrea’s mosaics and mixed media artworks are vibrant with flowing line, joyous colour, and whimsical, enigmatic characters. Michele is a Fleurieu Peninsula, South Australian/Kaurna Country artist who has studied at the School of Colour and Design in Sydney, Central School of Art in Adelaide, and with renowned mosaicists Martin Cheek (UK), Julie Richey (USA) and KokoMosaico (Italy). She has worked with the mosaic medium for over 20 years, doing commissions and community projects as well as individual practice. Michele’s small mosaics of animals, birds, and insects are inspired by local wildlife and 4th and 5th Century Roman and Byzantine mosaics found in north-eastern Italy.
EXHIBITIONS: Michele’s 2014 solo exhibition, Glimpses of Italy, (STARS) in Willunga, was Michele’s creative response to a tour of north-eastern Italy in late 2013 to study centuries-old mosaics and meet with international contemporary masters of this ancient ‘art of the muse’. Her work has been exhibited in SALA and MAANZ exhibitions, Red Poles Gallery, and Tour Down Under events, and features in the international CD portfolios Mosaic Art 4 and Mosaic Art 5.
